Merial Introduces Next Generation In Flea And Tick Prevention

September 11, 2000

Merial, the world's leading animal health company, announced today that it has recently received approvals from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to market FRONTLINE Plus (fipronil/(S)-methoprene) for Dogs and FRONTLINE Plus for Cats in the United States.

FRONTLINE Plus for Dogs and FRONTLINE Plus for Cats Combine Proven Effectiveness of Fipronil with IGR

These new products combine an adulticide and insect growth regulator for complete flea control and broad-spectrum tick protection for dogs and cats, respectively.

FRONTLINE Plus combines fipronil, the active ingredient in other FRONTLINE brand products, and (S)-methoprene, an insect growth regulator (IGR), to provide the most effective spot-on flea and tick protection available for dogs and cats, based on registered label claims.

"FRONTLINE is the proven leader in flea and tick control," said Dr. William Ryan, senior director, U.S. veterinary professional services, Merial. "With the development of FRONTLINE Plus, Merial has continued its commitment to develop innovative products to meet the growing and changing needs of pet owners and veterinarians across the country. These revolutionary products for dogs and cats offer complete protection against all flea life stages in one product application - FRONTLINE Plus.

The adulticide, fipronil, kills adult fleas and ticks, while the IGR, (S)-methoprene, kills developing flea eggs and larvae. FRONTLINE Plus is the only topical treatment of its kind that kills all stages of fleas on dogs for up to three months and for up to six weeks on cats, as well as the ticks that transmit serious diseases, including those that may carry Lyme disease. Unlike any other product on the market, FRONTLINE Plus is satisfaction-guaranteed to treat and control the four major kinds of ticks with only one dose.

"For 20 years, (S)-methoprene has proven to be a highly effective IGR, with an excellent safety profile, when used as directed," Ryan said. "Its excellent translocation properties and persistence of activity make it the preferred partner for fipronil."

Veterinarians have increasingly become aware of the importance of helping pet owners protect their pets against flea infestations. Now, with the introduction of FRONTLINE Plus, veterinarians have the ability to proactively control adult and developing fleas from attacking the pet, while also providing the added assurance of protection against ticks.

"We have recognized a remarkable increase in tick-borne diseases in recent years," said Dr. Edward Breitschwerdt, North Carolina State University, College of Veterinary Medicine, Raleigh, N.C. "It is more important than ever that pets -- both dogs and cats -- are protected. Products like FRONTLINE Plus can provide the best protection available for both dogs and cats against the major types of ticks."

Like other FRONTLINE brand products, FRONTLINE Plus is a spot-on flea and tick preventive in a single pipette that is to be applied in a single spot directly to the animal's skin between the shoulder blades.

FRONTLINE Plus offers the same product guarantees pet owners and veterinarians have come to expect -- fast-acting, long-lasting, waterproof and satisfaction-guaranteed.

FRONTLINE Plus products can be used on cats and kittens 8 weeks of age or older, and on dogs and puppies 8 weeks of age and older, and over 11 pounds. Merial intends to introduce FRONTLINE Plus into other countries around the world as soon as possible, subject to local regulatory approvals.

Description
FRONTLINE Plus for Dogs and FRONTLINE Plus for Cats is the most effective spot-on flea and tick protection available, based on registered label claims. They offer a dual mechanism of action against fleas, combining the best adulticide, fipronil, with a proven IGR, (S)-methoprene, which kills flea eggs and larvae. FRONTLINE Plus offers complete protection against all flea life stages in one product. In addition, FRONTLINE Plus kills all stages of all major species of ticks, including deer ticks, which may carry Lyme disease.

Method of Prevention
FRONTLINE Plus completely breaks the flea life cycle and controls tick infestations. The adulticide, fipronil (the active ingredient in other FRONTLINE brand products), treats and controls fleas for up to three months on dogs and up to six weeks on cats, while the IGR, (S)-methoprene, kills developing flea eggs and larvae over the same period. Fipronil collects in the oils of the skin and hair follicles, and is released from hair follicles onto the coat and the skin. (S)-methoprene also translocates on the pet. For 20 years, (S)-methoprene has proven to be a highly effective IGR with an excellent safety profile when used as directed. FRONTLINE Plus remains effective even after dogs and cats are subjected to bathing, water immersion, or exposure to sunlight.

Dosage and Administration
Like FRONTLINE, FRONTLINE Plus is a spot-on flea and tick preventive in a single pipette applied directly to the dog's or cat's skin in a single spot between the shoulder blades. FRONTLINE Plus is available as a single presentation for cats and kittens 8 weeks of age or older. It is also available in four sizes for dogs and puppies 8 weeks of age or older, according to weight -- 11-22 pounds, 23-44 pounds, 45-88 pounds and 89-132 pounds. FRONTLINE Plus offers the same product guarantees pet owners and veterinarians have come to expect - fast-acting, long-lasting, waterproof and satisfaction-guaranteed. FRONTLINE Plus can be used on kittens 8 weeks of age or older, and on puppies 8 weeks of age or older, and over 11 pounds.
