Dairy FAQs

Here's a list of a few questions dairy producers have asked members of the MERIAL® veterinary and technical staffs. We've posted the questions and their answers on Merial.com so we can share valuable information with more producers via the net.

  Q. How much IVOMEC® EPRINEX® do I need?
  A. IVOMEC EPRINEX Pour-On is available in 5 convenient product sizes: 250 mL, 1 liter, 2.5 liter, 5 liter and 20 liter. This table shows you how many treatments you'll get from each size, based on the weight of the animals treated.

  Q. How much product should I administer per animal?
  A. IVOMEC EPRINEX is labeled for use at a dose level of 1 mL per 10 kg (22 lbs) of body weight, which converts to:
  • 25 mL for a 550 lb animal
  • 50 mL for an 1,100 lb animal
  • 70 mL for a 1,540 lb animal

  Q. Can I use IVOMEC EPRINEX on my entire herd?
  A. Yes. In fact, for the best control of external parasites apply IVOMEC EPRINEX Pour-On to all cattle in your herd. Cattle introduced to the herd afterward should be treated prior to introduction. IVOMEC EPRINEX can be used on all dairy animals, including the breeding and pregnant animals in your herd.

  Q. Does IVOMEC EPRINEX work on flies?
  A. IVOMEC EPRINEX Pour-On is labeled for control of horn flies (Haematobia irritans) for 7 days, so it's an important part of an integrated control program that utilizes other control methods to provide extended control of horn flies. For control of flies other than horn flies, use an appropriate fly control program approved for use on dairy animals and in dairy premises. Ask your veterinarian or animal supply dealer which products other producers in your area are using effectively against flies.

  Q. How many doses of a Coliform mastitis vaccine does it take to effectively control mastitis caused by E. coli?
  A. Testing confirms that only two doses of a J-VAC® vaccine from Merial provide effective protection against Coliform mastitis caused by E. coli.1

  Q. What is included in the IGENITY Test?
  A. The IGENITY Test Kit contains everything a producer needs for DNA sampling and genotype testing. Hair follicle (or other acceptable DNA samples) are gathered and placed in the collection containers provided. Matched barcodes are provided for uniquely identifying the sample and the animal’s records. An animal record sheet is also provided. The sample is sent in the self-addressed envelope provided. A small envelope containing the DNA sample is sent to Merial labs. Lab test results are returned to producers via the Internet, mail or fax in 10-15 business days from receipt of tissue sample in the laboratory.
