Feedlot FAQs

Here's a list of a few questions cow/calf producers have asked members of the MERIAL® veterinary and technical staffs. We've posted the questions and their answers on Merial.com so we can share valuable information with more producers via the net.

Occasionally, a packer says grubs are found in the backs of cattle when slaughtered, yet these cattle were treated with one of the IVOMEC Brand products. What happened?

Is IVOMECĀ® Pour-On as effective against grubs as the injectable IVOMEC products?

Is there an effective overall animal health program for my cattle?

  Q. Occasionally cattle arrive at the feedlot when the temperature is extremely low, even below freezing. Can I still use IVOMEC Brand injectable products?
  A. Yes. IVOMEC Brand injectable products contain 40% glycerol formal, which permits excellent syringeability even in subfreezing conditions.

  Q. Occasionally, a packer says grubs are found in the backs of cattle when slaughtered, yet these cattle were treated with one of the IVOMEC Brand products. What happened?
  A. What the packer may be seeing is the chitinous cuticle of the grub, not the grub itself. Ivermectin is very effective on grubs. At certain times of the year, the grub’s life cycle takes it to the back of the animal, especially if the cattle have not been treated previously with an ivermectin product. When an IVOMEC Brand product is administered, the grubs will be killed. However, the chitinous cuticle of the grub will not be absorbed and will be present when the hide is removed after slaughter.

  Q. Is IVOMECĀ® Pour-On as effective against grubs as the injectable IVOMEC products?
  A. Yes. All IVOMEC Brand products are extremely effective against the cattle grub.1

  Q. Is there an effective overall animal health program for my cattle?
  A. The new MERIAL® SUREHEALTH™ Program has been developed with veterinarians to help livestock producers enjoy the economic rewards of improved animal health, well being, and productivity. It’s the first program of its kind. Copies are available from Merial and MERIAL business partners. Or, click here to go to MERIAL SUREHEALTH Program for Beef Cattle.

  Q. What is included in the IGENITY Test?
  A. The IGENITY Test Kit contains everything a producer needs for DNA sampling and genotype testing. Hair follicle (or other acceptable DNA samples) are gathered and placed in the collection containers provided. Matched barcodes are provided for uniquely identifying the sample and the animal’s records. An animal record sheet is also provided. The sample is sent in the self-addressed envelope provided. A small envelope containing the DNA sample is sent to Merial labs. Lab test results are returned to producers via the Internet, mail or fax in 10-15 business days from receipt of tissue sample in the laboratory.
