Why MERIAL SUREHEALTH?
We've developed the MERIAL SUREHEALTH protocols because - like the beef and dairy producers of America - we know that even after they recover, animals who have been sick may never quite catch up to those who stay healthy.
How wide can the gap be? Consider these results taken from a summary of the Texas A&M Ranch to Rail program conducted from 1991-19951:
- Healthy cattle produced higher-quality carcasses
- Healthy cattle had a more favorable return of $92.26 than cattle that had been sick
- The total cost of gain for healthy cattle was 17% lower than cattle that had been sick
- There are cattle feeding operations willing to pay more for good-quality, properly immunized and backgrounded calves
- A comprehensive herd-health regimen for calves, including parasite and liver fluke control along with a vaccination program, yields more predictable, consistent, favorable results
University studies have demonstrated that internal parasites and liver fluke can compromise an animal's health by interfering with the animal's ability to develop an adequate immune response to vaccinations against respiratory and reproductive diseases that spell losses for the cattle industry.2 Animals affected by these conditions may suffer from poor performance, higher costs, reduced gain, and in some cases, lower quality. The costs from death loss and medical expenses can reduce the bottom line even further.
And what about dairy cattle? Mastitis-related losses are estimated at $181 per cow each year. Nematodes affect milk production, reproduction, and immune response - studies have shown that 77% of herds from New York, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and Wisconsin test positive for roundworm; 87% test positive for nematode larvae.3

The MERIAL SUREHEALTH Program and Preconditioning Certification Program for beef cattle is designed for calves, replacement heifers, cows, and bulls. MERIAL SUREHEALTH includes parasite control, immunization, and best management practices for preweaned calves, weaned calves, heifers, cows, and bulls.
