1. Contact your swine veterinarian for an HM/LE program outline, participation requirements and supervision.
2. Complete the HM/LE Agreement form and order the IVOMEC for Swine Brand Products needed to complete the two dose implementation through Merial. Fax a copy of your agreement form to Merial for approval and to initiate the order of IVOMEC for swine. (Fax # 1-678-638-3500)
3. Market all hogs reaching market weight or greater.
4. Treat all pigs on all sites of the farm with IVOMEC for Swine Injection product at the label-recommended dosage on Day 1 of the program.
5. On days 18 - 21, market all hogs reaching market weight or greater.
6. On days 18 - 21 retreat all pigs on farm with IVOMEC for Swine Injection product at the label-recommended dosage.
7. Pigs born between the initial and second treatment should be injected on the day the second treatment is administered to entire herd. Use IVOMEC Injection 0.27% for Grower and Feeder Pigs for accurate dosing on piglets. (Make sure you have a good syringe that can deliver an accurate 1/4 Ml dose.)
8. All replacement breeding animals (gilts and boars) entering the premises or coming out of the finishing area, must be isolated and treated with 2 doses of IVOMEC Injection for Swine 18-21 days apart before being placed with the other breeding stock. Isolate for at least 7 days following the second injection.
This is critical for maintaining a mange and lice-free herd. Most re-infestations occur due to improper treatment and isolation of new incoming or replacement animals.
Practical Tips for HM/LE Implementation
- For IVOMEC Injectable products use a 16 gauge 3/4 inch needle to be administered subcutaneously in the neck region. An 18-20 gauge needle may be more appropriate for small pigs.
- When determining proper dosage with IVOMEC, follow label instructions. Pigs must not be treated within 18 days of slaughter with IVOMEC Injection for Swine.
- It is encouraged to weigh a few pigs to get a good idea of animal weights. When estimating the weight of a group of hogs, set your syringe for the largest animal in the group. Do not under-dose. If a sow weights 450 lb. and your syringe is a pistol grip model, delivering a maximum dose of 5 mL per squeeze, set your syringe at 3 mL and squeeze twice. If they weigh 600 lb., set the syringe at 4 mL and squeeze twice.
- Consider any animal coming to the herd from an outside source to be infested. All new arrivals must go through the two-dose treatment and isolation as outlined in the HM/LE guidelines. Isolation relative to external parasites requires no physical contact of infested animals with uninfested (clean) animals. This means a solid partition (wall, building) between animals free of parasites and those that may be infested.
- Basic herd biosecurity practices should be followed to prevent re-introduction of lice or mange. Herd biosecurity procedures include proper isolation, pig flow, workers clothing and boots, and traffic from potentially infested areas to uninfested areas.1-4
