HM/LE Protocol #2

1. All biosecurity and isolation procedures* outlined in Protocol 1 should be followed for pigs injected with IVOMEC for Swine or fed with IVOMEC Premix for swine.**

2. All sows, boars, replacement gilts, and nursing pigs are injected with IVOMEC Injection for Swine following the standard HM/LE program (as in Protocol 1).

3. Nursery, grower, and finishing pigs are treated with IVOMEC Premix for Swine on a 7-7-7 program. The 7-7-7 program is a treatment regimen of 7 days with IVOMEC Premix in the feed, 7 days without IVOMEC, and then again 7 days with

IVOMEC Premix in the feed.

4. Replacement animals introduced into the herd would be treated with the
7-7-7 program.

** IVOMEC Premix for Swine can be used at any stage of production.

NOTE: Maintenance of a strict biosecurity1-4 protocol [i.e., isolation, movement of people, animals, feed, and equipment to, from and within their production facilities, etc.,] is essential to prevent reintroduction of mange and lice. Consult your veterinarian and the IVOMEC for Swine HM/LE protocol for complete details.

Practical Tips for HM/LE Implementation

  • For IVOMEC Injectable products use a 16 gauge 3/4 inch needle to be administered subcutaneously in the neck region. An 18-20 gauge needle may be more appropriate for small pigs.
  • When determining proper dosage with IVOMEC, follow label instructions. Pigs must not be treated within 18 days of slaughter with IVOMEC Injection for Swine.
  • It is encouraged to weigh a few pigs to get a good idea of animal weights. When estimating the weight of a group of hogs, set your syringe for the largest animal in the group. Do not under-dose. If a sow weights 450 lb. and your syringe is a pistol grip model, delivering a maximum dose of 5 mL per squeeze, set your syringe at 3 mL and squeeze twice. If they weigh 600 lb., set the syringe at 4 mL and squeeze twice.
  • Consider any animal coming to the herd from an outside source to be infested. All new arrivals must go through the two-dose treatment and isolation as outlined in the HM/LE guidelines. Isolation relative to external parasites requires no physical contact of infested animals with uninfested (clean) animals. This means a solid partition (wall, building) between animals free of parasites and those that may be infested.
  • Basic herd biosecurity practices should be followed to prevent re-introduction of lice or mange. Herd biosecurity procedures include proper isolation, pig flow, workers clothing and boots, and traffic from potentially infested areas to uninfested areas.1-4

*Isolation procedures: (a) Isolation criteria may vary according to the goals established by you and your veterinarian. (b) For isolation from contact-transmitted diseases, such as mange and lice, pig to pig contact must be prevented. If animals cannot be housed in separate buildings, pens should be placed with at least six feet of separation or with a solid barrier between pens. (c) All incoming animals must be treated and isolated in a separate building for 25 to 28 days before being allowed to join the herd.
